I have, personally, contributed to the Linux kernel to add device support into Linux. Unfortunately this is not a normal user-up-datable addition (although it is possible). This is largely because the vendor/product IDs and associated device configuration haven't been added to the device database. I have come across some newer USB audio interfaces which haven't worked. The Linux audio system can be overcomplex at times, but the good news is most audio interfaces will work. So could someone please tell me that I can do some decent recording with linux too? All I heard so far from people I know is stuff like 'Oh you won't get around Cubase or Pro Tools, the Audio Interface won't have Linux drivers' and on and on and on.

I am not really willing to switch operating system, just kinda love my linux and since I am not going to do anything professional I don't really want to go for apple. My question now is if some (Linux)-Users could tell what they are using and if they would recommend buying it. So far I own an Acoustic guitar (without pickup), an electric guitar and a Line6 Spider IV 15 amp (which I never came to love since) I already found a DAW called Ardour (afaik some people here use that too). Mostly I think of Microphones and Audiointerface. So I thought I might buy some basic recording equipment on a budget of say maybe 300 - 500 €. After listening to some stuff some people did here I have this 'I-want-to-do-that-too'-feeling all the time.
